Exactly what is the danger if that were to happen? Does the plastic give off fumes that can contaminate the food?

Mylar bags are supposed to be impermeable so theoretically, probably not. I tend to err on the conservative side, though, and recommend food-grade buckets on the slight chance one of the bags is improperly or inadequately sealed (by accident, of course).

New to this page and a first time "do it yourselfer". I found this extremely detailed and efficient. Thank you so much! Do you have to use food grade buckets if they are in the mylar bags?

Since there's only one person (or two if my son shows up) I use mainly one quart to one gallon mylar bags. I don't prepare the metal cans in any way, but I do make sure the lids are very tight. A large stone on top adds a big more weight for nosy raccoons. I have also sealed the edges with duct tape, and have, both inside and in my house, a breakdown of what is in each can so I know exactly which one I need to look in.

In reply to <a href="https://strategiclivingblog.com/packing-food-in-mylar-bags/#comment-12451">Mr. L</a>.

Personally I just use metal trash cans as faraday cages against EMP, and pack my food in mylar bags that are stored in food grade plastic buckets. With the food in the mylar bags the vermin can't smell the food so they tend to leave the buckets alone. If your situation has more inquisitive vermin and you'd prefer to use a metal trash can then I'd recommend lining it with cardboard and then filling it with mylar bagged food.
I prefer the 1 gallon mylar bags since I want to keep as much food protected by only opening a bit at a time. But I've bought up to 5 gallon mylar bags. Not sure if anyone makes anything bigger than that.
