Sometimes it gets down to embracing the "good enough" method of doing things!

When I was in my early 50's, I was still gung-ho career, thinking I would never want to retire. If I could do it over, I would have started to simplify years ago. Then again, I may never have started writing and may never have started Backdoor Survival.

Please do make some time for yourself now and mostly, don't let your husband and children enable you to keep pushing. My DH, Shelly, was a great enabler so I have learned to make him aware that he is doing so. Sometimes I just put on my headphones and ignore him while doing my thing. That is very effective LOL.

I purchased a set of 150 Prismacolors earlier this spring, not that I needed them since I had 2 sets of 72, plus various sets from other companies. Anyway, I have only used them once or twice. I find it much easier to use a combination of alcohol markers and gel pens. Definitely, the alcohol markers are easier on the hands and do not need sharpening. I really want to start a blog series on the ins outs of grown-up coloring. I have learned so much that I believe would be helpful, especially for those of us at a certain age.

I built a new life for myself in my 40's, and for a while had a carefree attitude. But I now find myself back 'in the grind' in my 50's, back to the focus being on the grandkid (rather than the kids), taking care of home, and work. The one thing that hasn't changed is my I don't care attitude, ie, IDK about keeping up with the Jones' anymore. The one thing I lack these days is 'me time'. It's not that those around me don't encourage it, it's more me saying I have to get this and that done. But I do give myself permission to not do things, until no one else in the house picks up the slack. Then I have to get it done. Grr...There are two other adults in the house, and yet the dishwasher is full of clean dishes, and the sink full of dirty dishes...BUT, they did have dinner ready when I came home from work...that is a rarity....

Great article. I will be 51 in a couple of months and I was under that false illusion that things will slow down, life will get easier. Well only recently I have realized that I must make it so if that is going to be the case. While we have a ways to go before my husband and I can retire, I do want to start simplifying things in my life now and trying to fit in some of that me time. It seems so simple but I know I just haven't been able to do it. My to do list drives me ever forward and I am left with wishing for time to read or crochet. I guess I just need to keep working at it. One thing that does moitivate me in that regard is that I think that it is a great lesson for my 19 yr old son and my 16 yr old daughter. Mental health, stress levels and ultimately physical health benefit when you can unplug, relax and just take time to simply enjoy. Wish you the best Gaye, in all of your endeavours!
