Is American Freedom Under Siege?

Is American Freedom Under Siege?

As a point of reference, when I first started blogging in 2010, I had a lot of angst over the meltdown of certain financial institutions, unjustified taxpayer-funded government bailouts, the real or perceived violation of our Bill of Rights, and the forward march of socialism in the United States.  The antidote for me was to embrace preparedness, learn situational awareness, and to become a voice for others with similar concerns.

Let us fast forward to today.  The good news is that I am as prepared as I can be with an abundance of stored food, water, and supplies in two separate locations.  After losing a good portion of my retirement funds in the 2009 meltdown, I have learned to live without many of the luxuries I formerly took for granted while still enjoying life.  I was finally able to retire and for all intents and purposes, am finding that social security and a modest annual dip into savings is keeping me afloat and then some.

On the other hand, many of the topics I wrote about way back when are again bubbling to the surface.  They are fueled by the additional dynamic that the internet has brought into play.  Google, Facebook, Twitter, Fake News, and censorship of the free press.  Sadly, these influences and influencers are shaping the minds of young people who have grown up with technology and have no clue about the precious freedoms we oldsters have embraced since birth.  Those same freedoms are rapidly being eroded and precious few of us seem to care.

The bottom line is that we have become a society where being a victim and/or being entitled is cause for celebration.  And that is just plain wrong.

Let me explain.

Encore: Get the Updated Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage for Free Oct 31 to Nov 4

Preppers Guide to Food Storage for Free

It is once again time to grab a copy of The Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage for free. The dates are Oct 31 to Nov 4.

Those of you familiar with my book will notice that I have recently changed the cover in order to reflect that the book is no longer a part of or associated with the Backdoor Survival website. You will also find that I have updated the “About the Author” section to reflect my current life situation which is retired and living in Arizona.  There are a few other small changes, but nothing major.

It is hard to believe that The Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage was first published in December 2013.

Although not a lot has changed relative to food storage methods and techniques, there are some pieces missing in the book, such as dealing with food storage when there are special health or diet concerns.  In addition, moving from Washington State to Arizona has greatly influenced my thoughts relative to the stability of canned and packaged goods when maintaining a steady 70 degree or less environment is either cost-prohibitive or impossible.   I will be addressing those issues in upcoming articles here on Strategic Living.

Strategic Living Book Festival:  Be Ready For Anything by Daisy Luther

Be Ready for Anything Book Review and Author Interview

Today I am pleased to announce the launch of the Strategic Living Book Festival.  This is something I have done in the past as a way to introduce you to the best new books in the prepping, homestead, and survival niches.  Going forward, I also plan to share books about life, hobbies, and just about anything else that will contribute to your overall well being.  As I have done before, with each book I will include a brief book review, an author interview, and a book giveaway.

It only seems appropriate that I start things off with one of the most credible and prolific preparedness authors I know, Daisy Luther.  Her new book, “Be Ready For Anything”, is a one-stop shop for all things preparedness.  I do not say this lightly because even with all of the great preparedness books out there, you would be well served with just this one.

Here is a brief introduction to the book itself, an interview with Daisy, and of course, details of the book giveaway.

A Nod to Personal Independence and the Protection of Individual Rights

July 2, 2019 Gaye Levy 10 Comments

Current events and the need for personal independenc

There was a time in the not so recent past when I had a lot of angst.  I wrote about the need for personal independence and the protection of individual rights under what I perceived as big government and tyranny.  It may surprise you to learn that those thoughts have not changed and if anything, have accelerated in light of our current divisive political climate.

Today I feel I can no longer remain quiet.  This week is Independence Day in the United States and I for one, am fearful of what we may become.  I am full of angst.

Let me explain.

Since I began blogging in 2010, I have championed our right to freedom, free speech, and independence from cruel, unreasonable, or arbitrary use of power or control.  That is, by the way, the definition of tyranny.  In support of that,  I have done my best to stay focused on what we as individuals can do on our own to become self-reliant and prepared for the uncertain times that we face.

There have been the expected bumps along the way, including a change in my perspective on certain aspects of prepping that no longer seem relevant.  Likewise, there have been the ebbs and tides of the risks inherent in my personal situation.

All that being said, one risk I have personally prepared for is the dismantling of one of the basic tenants upon which our nation was formed, namely the Declaration of Independence. That brings me around to Independence Day and the 4th of July.

I have shared Independence Day sentiments in the past and quite honestly, nothing much has changed since my first Independence Day article in 2011.  The bag of woes we face as a nation still weighs a ton with the only difference being the contents of that bag.

What I Learned Using CBD Oil

June 30, 2019 Gaye Levy 6 Comments

What I have learned about CBD oil while using it myself.

I am on a mission to learn and understand more about CBD oil.  Is CBD oil a modern day equivalent of snake oil?  Based on my experience this past month, I think not.

As I have previously written,  my original intent when embarking on this journey was to see if CBD oil would work for my husband’s chronic back pain. I also wanted to see if by taking it myself, I felt anything at all, good bad or indifferent given I did not think I had any specific ailments to address.

To that end, those of you that follow me on Facebook know that I have been providing weekly FB updates relative to my personal use of  CBD oil.  It has been an interesting experience, filled with unexpected surprises.

In this article, I share what I have learned so far while using CBD oil in my own household.  As you read this, however, be aware that CBD works differently on different people and that what is working for my husband, Shelly, and myself, may be different for you.
